Yoga & QiGong
“Our greatest freedom is in the space to pause before responding”
Rollo May
Mindfully practiced yoga & qigong can cultivate the space May talks of; the capacity for mindful response, and right now that feels like something very precious indeed in our time of anxiety and mental health challenges.
Buddhism talks of “taking refuge” in these practices. Not “head in the sand” escape, but shelter from life’s storms. Not “keep calm & carry on” (perhaps an appropriate 1940’s maxim) but “learn to self regulate the nervous system and then respond as mindful warriors from the heart” Not so catchy on a t-shirt!
It begins with remembering how to breath well. Here’s a video for you.
In essence, anything we do whilst paying mindful attention to the breath, and the experience, might be called yoga. Try it while walking in parks and wilder places and watch what happens to your (less) nervous system as you combine moving, focused attention and breath?!
At the moment I just teach one practice a week here. And I offer short term 1-2-1 sessions for those wishing to begin and prepare to join mine or others group practices safely and happily. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
And there’s more about the yoga I practice here.
